[ADOBE DREAMWEAVER CS5.5 NATIVE APPS] Hey! I'm Scott Fegette, senior product manager for Dreamweaver. Although Web browsing today is more powerful than ever, native mobile applications are increasingly becoming a requirement for a modern Web project. However, your average Web professional isn't always a native coder nor has the available time to learn new programming languages and APIs. The PhoneGap framework has rapidly gained popularity amongst Web pros as a means to write native mobile applications using the skills that they've already become comfortable with--HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. So we decided to work together with the PhoneGap folks to integrate their wonderful framework for Android and iOS directly into Dreamweaver CS5.5, which will now let you package up any site project in Dreamweaver into a distributable Android or, on the Mac platform, iOS application. Whereas PhoneGap can help convert your standards-based projects into native applications, it's still necessary to install the Android and iOS SDKs to give PhoneGap and Dreamweaver the tools necessary to do their work. Mac-based Dreamweaver customers can register, download, and install the iOS SDK from developer.apple.com. And for Android, Dreamweaver will even go out and get the current SDK, install and configure it for you behind the scenes, setting everything up for action. Once you've configured Dreamweaver's native application support, you can then start building out a site using either our jQuery Mobile PhoneGap starter template, or if you wish to start from scratch, just a blank site definition. You'll build the application just like any other browser-based app, using Dreamweaver's well-established design and development tools. You can even use PhoneGap's JavaScript API to access device functionality like geolocation, accelerometer, and more. To test your application, you can simply use the Build and Emulate command to send your project to your emulator of choice--in this case, Android. Or if you're a rock star who never needs to test, just build it directly with the Build command. From here you'll have a working native application that you can install ad hoc on devices for local testing and a complete project for each SDK, allowing you to sign and build a final version of your application that can then be submitted to the Android and iOS app stores for distribution. So as you can see, Dreamweaver CS5.5 doesn't just help you build mobile-savvy websites, but it helps you build full-blown applications as well. We really think this is going to help you expand the coverage and give you a lot more opportunities to present to your clients and make your work even better. I hope you enjoyed this. And if you want to hear a little bit more about PhoneGap, keep posted to this channel. We're going to talk a little bit more about very specific features within it in videos to come. Thanks a lot for listening today. [ADOBE TV - tv.adobe.com]
