My name's Julieanne Koss and in today's episode of The Complete Picture we're going to be taking a look at the new Mini Bridge right inside of Photoshop. Now, in past versions, we've had Bridge and we still have Bridge, but what we found was a lot of customers liked to see their images directly within Photoshop. I don't know if any of you remember, but in Photoshop 7, we had the file browser, and it was directly in Photoshop. And then, when Photoshop CS came out, then we had Bridge, which became the bridge between multiple applications. But we still find that people don't know about Bridge, so what we've done is we've created a Flash panel directly inside Photoshop so that you can look at your images there. And it's not just inside Photoshop--it's also in InDesign for those of you who are using InDesign. All right, let's focus on Photoshop. How do we get to Mini Bridge? Well, there's 2 ways. In the upper left-hand corner, we have a little icon here--MB--that's for Mini Bridge. You can also go under the Window menu, go to Extensions, and that's where Mini Bridge is. Of course, once you display Mini Bridge, you can always dock it with other panels. So I could slide it over here and dock it inside with my layers panel, or we can dock it next to my layers panel or what I like to do is actually dock it down here at the bottom. Now, obviously that's a little bit too big, so let's just resize that down a little bit. Excellent. Now, some of the features you'll already know about if you're using Bridge. We've got the backwards and forwards navigation, we've got the ability to go to the parent folder or look at your recent folders or files here. We have the ability to go home. Over here on the right, we can jump directly to Bridge. We can change what it is we're seeing, So right now, I really like to see the Path Bar so I want to leave that up. The Navigation Pod--well, that's going to help me move from folder to folder so I want that, and then the Preview Pod will show me kind of a larger display of a single image, but because I keep Mini Bridge so small, I'm going to go ahead and close the Preview Pod there. You can also do searches directly from within Mini Bridge. Down here at the bottom, you'll notice that we can go into Preview mode or close that, and right here, we have a lot of different options. For example, I can just see my thumbnails without the title or the other metadata. I can change this to a gridlock--I kind of like that because I'm tidy-- it just kind of locks everything to a grid-- so I'm going to turn that back on. And we can display things as Thumbnails or in a Filmstrip, as Details, or as a List. Right here, we can determine what it is that we want to see. So for example, if we wanted to see our Hidden Files, we could see that. It will also help us do a Select All or Deselect, but of course, you can go in and just click on an image, or Shift-click in order to select a range of images. Here's our option to Filter, so we can quickly filter by different amounts of star ratings. We can go here and change what it is that we are seeing, as far as the order goes, and how things are being sorted, so By Filename or by Rating. Finally, we also have the option if we select more than one file to actually jump directly from Mini Bridge to features like Merge to HDR Pro or Photomerge Okay. Now, I personally think that one of the coolest features in Mini Bridge is just the ability to take an image and drag and drop it into the Photoshop image area. Now, you'll notice I have the application frame on, so dropping it there automatically launched Adobe Camera RAW, since this is a RAW file. Now we can go in and we can make our changes-- if we want to change exposure, maybe add a little contrast and clarity, and then go ahead and open up this image. So what's really great is that I kind of have all of the benefits of a file browser; just this time we've called it Mini Bridge and it's directly inside of Photoshop. But the cool thing is that it's not fighting Photoshop for any resources because Bridge is actually launched in the background. In fact, we can take a look at that. If I right mouse click on any image, I can say Reveal in Bridge and it will automatically sync Bridge to whatever folder Mini Bridge was looking at. in addition, in Bridge, you can take advantage of things like favorites. Let's say for example if I go to original files and I right mouse click on the Puppet Folder, I can add that to my favorites, and then when I return back to Photoshop and we scroll down here in my favorites area, you can see there is that Puppet Favorites. So the two applications are in sync, but Photoshop doesn't have to share the resources, which is fantastic. All right, let's go back to Bridge for just one moment. I want to show you 2 new features that I really think that you can make use of. The first one--we'll just return back to a folder that has a lot of images in it-- and select all of these files, and then I'll use the Tools menu in order to Batch Rename. Because it's a very common request for people to want to rename their files but really what they want to do is they want to rename just a portion of the file. They want to do what's called a String Substitution. So for example, in this case, all of my images start with the _MG_. What if I just want to change that out? So I'm going to tell Bridge to look for the _MG_ and I'm going to have it replace that with JKOST_ and we see the preview right here. So the numbering will stay exactly the same. I'm only changing a portion of the file name. Click Rename, and we can see that all of those have been renamed. The other feature that I want to show you is in the Output module. This is where you can create your PDF files, like your contact sheets and your web photo galleries. There have been 2 great enhancements. The first one is the ability to add a watermark. I'll go ahead and refresh my preview here, and Bridge will go ahead and build this PDF page with all of the options that I've set for Layout and stuff. For example, I've got 4 x 4 and it's going to be a on a black background with white text, but you can also see that I've got a little copyright watermark added and I did that right down here. You can add the Watermark, you can place it on each image, and you can either use text or you can insert an image. And if you have a layered Photoshop document that has transparency in it-- if you just save that as a .png file-- then we will keep and honor that transparency as we place your watermark. The second great thing is that once I've got this set up, all I need to do is click on this icon in order to save this template. So now I can go in and set up the 3 or 4 most common layouts and save them as templates and the next time, all I need to do to move between them is simply select them from the list here. All right, let's return back to Photoshop and Mini Bridge for one minute because I do want to show you something that I forgot and that is the ability to select a sequence of images and then tap the space bar in order to go into full screen mode. So now, I can use the right arrow key and move through my images. I could tap 1-5 in order to give them ratings, or 6-9 in order to give them color labels. And if I wanted to make a change to this, Command-R on the Macintosh or Control-R on Windows will take me directly to Camera RAW so that I could make changes in my exposure, maybe add a little bit of vibrance, and when I click Done, it takes me right back to that full screen mode. Tapping the Escape key will go ahead and bring me back to Mini Bridge. And one last thing--I'm just going to scroll down here and I'm going to click on a folder that has some video in it. Because sure enough, if I click on a movie and then tap the space bar key, that movie will play full screen, launched from Mini Bridge. Again, just tap the Escape key to get out of it. Okay--one last feature, but I need to make this a little bit larger to do this. Right here there was another menu item that wasn't showing up because I didn't have that panel large enough, and that's the ability to show items in pages. So if we go back to a folder that has multiple images in it that expand past this view in my layout here, now I can page through them as opposed to having to scroll through them. Okay--I know I keep saying, "Wait, there's one more," but I really think this is seriously one of the best features in Photoshop CS5. Let's say I already have one image open and now I want to combine another image. I want to layer these together as a composite. Watch this--if I drag an image from Mini Bridge on top of my image in Photoshop, it's going to bring up Camera RAW where I can make my changes to exposure, and when I click OK, Mini Bridge will automatically place that image as a Smart Object. So I can resize it, hit Enter or Return, and you can see on my Layers panel--here's the thumbnail for my Smart Object. So I can make changes to that, I can rotate it, I can enlarge it, I can shrink it without losing any quality. So as you can see, tons of power packed into Mini Bridge. I'm finding it incredibly useful to view my assets directly within Photoshop without having to switch applications and I think you will, too, so give it a test drive, let us know what you think.
